This past Thursday, November 15, the KU Delta Gamma’s were extremely happy to finally initiate 53 new members into the sisterhood! The Initiation process started on Wednesday, November 14, with the Inspiration dinner and rituals. The new members were invited over to the house for a lovely dinner prepared by the amazing house chef and dined with their pledge moms and fellow sisters.

Following initiation on Thursday, the newest Beta Kappa’s were showered with pink and blue presents at what every member calls a “DG Christmas.”  The new initiates were invited to ice cream and a sleepover in the tube room after the night’s events.

Not only did initiation show the new members the rituals of Delta Gamma, but it also let them hear about the incredible memories and lasting friendships DG has to offer. The rest of the DG’s could not be happier to officially welcome their beautiful new members into an amazing sisterhood filled with friendship. Congratulations, ladies!

Dad's Weekend

Last weekend, October 12th and 13th, the Delta Gamma’s celebrated Dad’s weekend and invited their dads up for a football filled weekend in Lawrence.  On Friday night, Delta Gamma rented out a room in the Eldridge hotel to enjoy appetizers and drinks with their dads.  Everyone enjoyed the pork, chicken, spinach dip, and all the other food that was provided all while getting to know each other before the next day’s festivities. On Saturday, all the DG’s and their dads sat together and cheered on the Jayhawks against Oklahoma State. Everyone still managed to enjoy themselves through an immense amount of rain and lightning and the game being postponed for a few hours. After the game, all the fathers were invited back over to the DG house for treats to end the weekend’s activities. Everyone had a great time getting to know each other’s families and are already looking forward to next year’s Dad’s weekend!

Anchor Splash 2012

This past Sunday, September 23rd, The KU Delta Gamma’s held their fall philanthropy event, Anchor Splash.

Wednesday

Anchor Splash was an all week event, starting on Wednesday with a penny wars competition.  Girls were stationed at tables on campus and had jars for every team that was competing in Anchor Splash. People could come by and drop penny’s and dollar bills, which were positive points, in a certain team’s jar, or drop other coins, which were negative points, in competitors jars.  Alpha Epsilon Pi ended up winning Wednesday’s competition and helped in the DG’s goal to raise money for Service for Sight.

Thursday

On Thursday afternoon, the Delta Gamma’s held the annual pretty eyes contest on campus.  Coaches chose their team member with the prettiest eyes and took a picture of them to display for all of campus to see.  Anyone could walk by and put a free ticket in the jar of the person who they thought had the prettiest eyes.  Alpha Kappa Lambda won by a landslide and received points for their team towards winning Anchor Splash.

Friday

Coaches and their teams spent all week decorating sailor hats to display on campus on Friday afternoon. Some houses decorated theirs with their letters while others chose a nautical theme to represent DG.  People on campus walked by and chose what they thought was the most creative hat, and Alpha Epsilon Pi ended up winning Friday’s competition.

Saturday

On Saturday night the DG’s spent their night making posters and getting ready for the following morning’s Alumni brunch.  They held a sisterhood event and the new jewelry line, Stella and Dot, came to show their fall collection at a trunk show.  All DG’s enjoyed spending time together and preparing for Sunday’s activities.

Sunday

Sunday morning started with an Alumni brunch at the house and coaches going to make sure their teams were prepared and ready to swim. Anchor Splash was held at the Robinson pool this year and had plenty of seating for everyone that wanted to come watch the competition.  The event started off with the different swim races and was followed by the belly flop competition. Next was the Anchorman competition, where one member from each team was selected to perform his talent and answer trivia about DG.  The team member from Alpha Kappa Lambda ended up winning Anchorman and received a custom designed sailor hat.  The winner of Anchor Splash was awarded to Alpha Epsilon Pi from all their money they raised through penny wars and their winning sailor hat.

The KU Delta Gamma’s raised around $12,000 through Anchor Splash, $5,000 more than last year. The girls are glad their hard work paid off and are already looking forward to their spring philanthropy, Softball for Sight.

Over the summer, all the KU Delta Gammas spent countless hours crafting and preparing for the newest members that they would welcome during this year’s fall formal recruitment. The ladies moved back to Lawrence and into the DG house on August 5th, and work week started promptly at 9am the next morning. They spent hours every day preparing to recruit the best pledge class yet by perfecting the skit and porch songs until late every night.

Fall formal recruitment was held from Tuesday, August 14th, through Friday, August 17th, with bid day being held on the first day of school, August 20th. Over the weekend, the sophomores created their bid day hats for their buddies, a DG tradition. Once the women going through recruitment were able to open their bid cards after a long hour of sitting on top of them, chaos broke loose. The DG’s were waiting anxiously outside for their new sisters with the hats and posters they had created. Some new members even cried because they were so happy to be a part of the KU DG sisterhood. All the ladies took bid day pictures and tie dyed out on the front lawn, followed by a pizza rolls and chicken fingers dinner provided by the wonderful new Delta Gamma chef, Mr. Jolly.

Fall formal recruitment has given the Delta Gamma Beta Kappa chapter 46 wonderful new women to become part of the sisterhood. The newest members have already started coming over to the house for meals, spending time with their bid day buddies, and meeting the other new members.  Thanks to DG, these girls have a lot to look forward to this year including serenades, initiation, holiday parties, formals, sisterhood events, and countless other functions that they will be able to get to know their new sisters at.

Trying Something New

With summer coming to a close it's time to start thinking about heading back to Lawrence. Along with the usual work week and formal recruitment that consumes the Delta Gammas in the first few weeks back at 1015 Emery Road, it is also a time where many goals are being set for the coming semester. Whether it be to recruit an amazing new member class, improve grades, or try to get more involved on campus, the dee gees are always coming up with ways to better the Beta Kappa chapter. My personal goal for DG since I was elected vp: communications last winter has been to improve this position as a whole. Recently, while wasting time between work and summer classes I decided it was time to amp up Beta Kappa's PR by coming up with new ways to keep collegians as well as alumna in the know about what's going on in Lawrence. That's where this whole blog idea came from.

The whole summer I have been focusing on one big project for my position: an entirely new website. While checking out other DG websites to get ideas for our own I stumbled upon a blog by the Mizzou Delta Gammas. After reading through a couple posts, I fell in love with the idea. That's when I decided it was time we tried something new this semester: our very own blog. Initially, I was worried to take on another big project that seemed to be a lot of work, but contrary to my belief it has actually been really fun. Creating this has even reminded me of my old MySpace and Xanga days. Although it started out feeling the exact same, I'll try to keep this blog a little more mature and spare all of you the latest middle school drama that overwhelmed my old Xangas. Instead, I will try to keep updating with the latest news that's buzzing around the house and on campus. So, here goes nothing!

Welcome to the Beta Kappa blog, Enjoy!!
